Private cancer treatment costs

Would just like to know if anyone has ever gone down the route of paying privately without health insurance (pay as you go treatment) and the cost of doing this.

I know every kind of treatment is different. The one I am interested in is kidney cancer treatment. We don't yet know the stage or if it has spread.

Just curious to know if anyone has ever done this and how to actually get the ball rolling. Thank you

  • Yes! It's been a positive experience so far. My husband has private medical insurance so he was able to use this. he recently had his kidney removed and surgeon was wonderful.

I can always give you the details. Please feel free to message me.

    Take care of yourself.

  • Thank you for your reply. Hope your husband is now on the mend and feeling better. We don't have insurance and have no idea on how much these things cost. Awaiting CT results and the moment and taking it from there. Very stressful time as you well know yourlsef. Thank you for your support x

  • Thank you. He hasn't long had his op which needed a full kidney removed.  He's doing well but very tired as expected.

The cost is roughly 12/13k for surgery alone
and hospital stay and anaesthetist are on top. Hope this helps. I think it depends on hospital but can vary slightly.

Best of luck and keep in touch. Hope all goes well for you.

  • Thank you so much. I'm glad to hear he's doing well.

Did your husband have any initial symptoms wich led to the diagnosis of his cancer?

My father initially started with blood in his urine. However, upon having the diagnosis of kidney cancer he is suffering from a lot of back pain in the same side as the tumour

  • Private surgery can run up a pretty big bill due to having to pay for blood test, X-ray, scans, drips, urine bags syringes and needles they itemise the bill down to a pair of gloves worn to examine you , then there's the Anaesthetic, hospital accommodation all on top of the operation which can vary due to what they find inside. When l had VVs   treatment an injection cost me £50 !  My simple ovarian cysts became a 4 1/2 hour surgery due to extensive adhesions l had no idea pre op although the surgeon did say it may be a bit stuck down just before l went to the theatre. My day surgery became 5 days in hospital.

I Would make inquiries about the real cost before embarking on the wholely private route. I hope the NHS can help you they are pretty prompt when they need to be listing you ASAP. If needed. The cost of any chemotherapy or other treatment would also be on top.
l hope you have your surgery soon and that all is well.
    Take care
    Susie
