Lymph node carcinoma with unknown origin

Hi my Dad has been told today following a biopsy of a lymph node in his groin and PET scan that he has carcinoma in his lymph nodes of unknown origin.  Initially we thought lymphoma but that has been ruled out.  CT scan and PET scan have shown no masses and only one lymph node in his coller bone and a few in his groin area with activity.  I was just after anyone who could point me in the drirection of the primary cause and why this is not shown on any scans?  Thanks

  • Hello jennag11

I'm sorry to hear that your Dad has been given this diagnosis. It's understandably a worrying time for you all.

Sometimes this does happen where despite tests and scans, the primary cause of the cancer can't be located. This is sometimes called cancer of unknown primary, or CUP, for short. We have some information about CUP on our website which you may find helpful to read through but I'd also suggest giving our team of nruses a call. I'm sure they will be happy to offer some information and advice. If you'd like to speak with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
