Mastectomy how to prepare emotionally

I am having a mastectomy in a few days and trying to get some help on how to prepare emotionally when I wake up to 1 breast. Any positive help from people that have been through it would be great. I'm trying to prepare myself as best as I can as feel I'm going to be a mess. I know the most important thing is getting rid of the cancer, though can't help worrying how I am going to feel with a part of me gone forever.

  • Hello Anabelle and welcome to Cancer Chat.

Recovering from a mastectomy can be both physically and emotionally very difficult but I'm glad you've joined us as we have many members who have had this surgery and will completely understand how you're feeling at the moment.

I'm sure some of them will be along soon to offer you their support and advice but if you'd like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday (excpet bank holidays) between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I hope this information we have on life after breast cancer surgery will help but do be sure to discuss your worries with your breast cancer nurse as well.

Our community are here for you Anabelle and will do everything they can to help you through this part of your cancer journey.

    Kind regards,
