PET scan before chemo

I have recently undergone a right mastectomy and sentinel node biopsy, 3 nodes showed traces, I was then given the option of chemo and radiotherapy or axillary full clearance , I opted for the clearance, been for results and 34 nodes removed of which 5 infected, been told I need chemo and radiotherapy but will need PET scan before starting treatment, been told this is purely backup and will determine the chemo etc but I am now stressing about the " what if" something else shows up even though it precaution, I've been so positive but feel quite deflated today, suppose it's good to be cautious but now feels like something else to worry about, meant to say I had hormone fed cancer.

  • I'm sorry that 5 of your nodes were found to be cancerous Halley and that a PET scan will be needed before you can begin your chemo and radiotherapy.

I'm sure our members who have been on this journey will completely understand how you're feeling at the moment, so you are not alone, and hopefully some of them will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

I hope you don't have to wait too long to have your scan and the results brings good news but if you'd like to discuss this or have any questions about your chemo or radiotherapy with one of our cancer nurses, they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Wishing you all the best as you move forward with your treatment.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Hailey

I am due to have a PET scan on the 14th . I have oral cancer to soft palate .  I too found thr PET scan alarming but my CNS nurse said it is standard procedure for all cancer patients and that they expect to find nothing .  I dont think this is specific to you but just what is 'done' so to speak.

I wish you all the strength and positivity in these traumatic times..
