Radiotherapy for gastroesophageal junction cancer

Hello,

My dad has just been diagnosed with a tumour at the top of his stomach where it meets the esophagus. It's stage 3 and because he had a heart attack two years ago he isn't a candidate for chemotherapy or surgery. He was offered either two weeks radiotherapy, which would give him up to a year or four weeks of treatment, which will give him longer.

This has been a terrible shock to all his family as he is otherwise in great health and has so much to live for. He has chosen four weeks of radiotherapy. Has anyone else been through radiotherapy for this long? I'm so worried about the toll this might take on him. Obviously it will be worth it if it prolongs his life but the doctor said it will be gruelling and at 80 years old this is a big worry. He's optimistic and is a very positive person. I can't find anyone who has had the same treatment so would love to hear from anyone who has had radiotherapy alone for this or stomach cancer.

  • Welcome to our forum, Marie21 although I'm sorry to hear about the news that brought you here.

I can appreciate that a lot must be going through your mind now and that you're understandably worried about you dad and his diagnosis.

Hopefully other members who went through a similar experience will be here shortly to chat with you and offer advice.

Also, if you want to take a look, we have some information on our website about radiotherapy which might be helpful.

With best wishes to you and your dad,

  • Many thanks for replying. I'm finding most people are treated with chemotherapy so I'm hoping radiotherapy alone will still be effective. I will read up on it. Thanks again x
