Bowel cancer with perforation of bowel help

Hi everyone thanks for reading first off,

In January my grandma who is 75 told us she hasn't been eating for a while and has had an MRI and they think she has bowel cancer. Fast forward two months and we still are non the wiser. We've spent weeks chasing up what's happening or even what cancer she has but no one would ever come back to us.

this week she had to go A&E because lack of eating and drinking has made her really poorly and she was admitted. Today we have found out she has bowel cancer spread from the ovaries and it's cause a whole to form in her bowel and they cannot give her anything.

they've said they can't operate or offer any treatment and me and the family are finding this difficult to come to terms with. Reading about this issue on the cancer research website says it's usually operated on to fix the hole so the person is able to eat and drink normally again but they haven't even offered that.

im not saying we don't believe the doctor but as we've waited 8 weeks to hear about her scan it makes me wonder why they didn't tell us that many weeks ago.

Has anyone or know of anyone that's had this issue before? I know how pressured the NHS is and I really want to see if she could be offered treatment elsewhere or even privately (not that we can afford it) but there must be something they can do? I just don't understand how they can leave her now to die!

any suggestions would be very much appreciated x

edit --- I forgot to say, the doctor said she could pass away at any minute due to her high chances of getting septicaemia but my mama is really healthy and has no other conditions. They were getting the palliative care team to come and see her today.

  • Hello Cjkeke15

I'm so sorry to hear about your Grandma's diagnosis and that you've been told that there is no treatment available for her.

Did the palliative care team come to meet with you this week? I hope that they were able to answer some of your questions and give offer some support.

If you still have questions about your Grandma's diagnosis and care then it's worth talking with the hospital PALS team. They provide a point of contact for patients, their families, and their carers and can help resolve concerns or problems.

If you want to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they will offer any information and advice that they can.

Obviously, this is a very difficult time for you all. Please do look after yourself in this situation as well. Keep in touch here on the forum if it helps to chat with others who may understand what you're going through.

    Best wishes,
