Mouth cancer

I have recently had the results of a biopsy from my cheek. I have been told it's between stage 1 and 2, pre cancerous but some abnormal cells, but no treatment is required unless anything changes. I'm so confused!  my next check up is in 3 months. I am really worried that it might spread without me noticing any changes and I'm confused about why they would wait for it to get worse before they operate. My consultant has told me to contact him if I notice any ulceration or bleeding then they will operate. He did say that the danger with mouth cancers is that it can spread to the lymph nodes.
This has been a shock as I really didn't think there was much wrong and I don't know what I should expect.
Any help and advise would be appreciated, many thanks

  • Hello Bellatrix453 and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat!

I would trust the experts on that - and it's good news that despite some abnormal cells being found, no treatment is required at present. I think what it means is that you will be closely monitored with regular check ups and if you notice any change it's important that you inform your consultant. I can understand why this watch and wait approach is causing you a lot of stress as you probably would rather have it dealt with before it got worse. But I am sure that your medical team are following the right approach and have a good reason not to operate straight away. However, if you feel unsure about anything, it might be a good idea to seek a second opinion. You can find out how to do this on this page.

I hope that you will hear from other members of the forum who have had a similar diagnosis and that they will be along soon to share their experience with you.

  • Hi,

29 year old, currently waiting for biopsy results for the same thing. I had a lump cut out of my cheek on the 15th and results are booked for 29th. Could I ask how long it took for your results to come through please? The wait is horrible :(

wishing you all the best and praying good news on your 3 month check up xx
