Terrified- atypical cells and hysterectomy

Hi, I'm 41 and have joined the forum to talk about my experience and hopefully find someone who has gone through similar.

About six weeks ago I had two large polyps removed from my uterus under GA which got sent away for a biopsy.

The results came back and they showed I have Atypical Polypoid Adenomyoma, which are cells that aren't cancer but can lead to cancer if left alone. I have been advised to have a hysterectomy, no other treatment has been tried or suggested.

I was told that it would have to be an abdominal hysterectomy because my uterus is large and there was a risk of the cells spreading elsewhere, does this sound right? If it was keyhole I might cope with the prospect a bit more, but living on my own I am dreading what i know is a long recovery process.

I am shocked and frankly terrified about the prospect, and I just wondered if anyone else had been diagnosed with the same, or had similar experience?

I haven't had any children and nothing has really been explained to me at all about the process. I am really feeling lost and disappointed in how I've been treated so far.

Any help or advice appreciated. Thanks

  • Hello Moonchild123,

I'm sorry to hear how you're feeling and I hope you'll be able to connect with other members in a similar situation. You should contact your doctor again so they can address your concerns. Please don't be afraid to ask questions, as it's important that you feel ready and informed ahead of any operation. There's also some information on hysterectomies here, which I hope will be useful.

    Best wishes,
