Lung cancer advice needed: should we go private?

Dear all,

Hope you are well.

My wife had some cough and short of breath in recent weeks. The hospital did X-ray and CT Scan, and found a huge right hemithorax mass measuring 13 cm X 10 cm X12 cm in her lung. She is 50, never smokes and is generally healthy. My small family, including my little daughter, my wife and myself are in shock now.

The NHS hospital is going to do further examination such as a PET CT, but it might need to wait for a few weeks. My daughter and I are very worried as we hope to find a place who can carry out the PET CT and all other relevant examinations very quickly, followed by the operation for removing the mass.

Would a private hospital be able to provide a much faster treatment for these? Any good private hospital specializing in lung cancer diagnosis and treatment? Any advice would be very much appreciated. Many thanks for the help.

Best regards to you all.

  • Hello Stephen_1,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I am so sorry to hear about your wife's diagnosis. I can imagine this must have come as a real shock to you all. I hope that you won't have to wait long for the scans and I can understand why you would want to have it all done as quickly as possible.

There is an interesting page on our website which is precisely about comparing NHS with private cancer treatment.  I hope that it will answer some of the questions you may have and also that you will hear from some of our members who have had to make the same difficult choice as to whether to go private or not.

Our cancer nurses are also just a free phone call away if there was anything you wanted to ask them following your wife's diagnosis or if you wanted to talk through your various options. You can ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope you won't mind but I have also slightly edited the title of your post to make it easier for others who have had a similar diagnosis or  faced similar treatment choices to see your post and hopefully share their experience with you.

Best wishes to you and your wife and I hope that you manage to find the best solution for her and that she can start her treatment very soon.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
