The surgeon got the cancer out during lumpectomy with clear margins, no spread to lymph nodes so do I still have breast cancer ?

HI. Feeling very anxious like you. I was diagnosed 4 weeks ago- lumpectomy this Wednesday 23rd,  radiothearapy and hormones to follow. It was all a complete shock- just a regular mamogram. I cannot praise enough for the care and reassurance I have received so far from health professionals. They will get me through this operation which is terrifing me at the moment. 

2 ladies at work in the same position a few years ago are fine, healhy and out the other side. They are well and living life to the full again! I'm holding onto that to get though the surgery and move on!

I’m nearly 4 weeks post op and my plan (hopefully) is the same as yours.

Hi sorry to jump on your post .

I had a lumpectomy and axillary clearance last August,  they removed 18 lymph nodes and 13 was cancerous,  5 weeks later I had to have a re-incision because they didn't get clear margins,  luckily after the 2nd op they got clear margins. 

I still suffer numbness under my arm , down one side of the arm and on the shoulder,  luckily I have full movement in that arm its just the numbness and the having to be careful of getting bites and scratches due to having no lymph nodes in that arm and of course now the summer is arriving having to make sure I wear high factor sun screen so not to get burnt. 

I was supposed to have had chemo,  radiotherapy and hormone blockers,  I refused them all , my choice .

I have a dented breast where the scar is and was told they could do plastic surgery to improve it but it doesn't bother me , I'm 51 and long since showed that part of my body to the world lol .

How you feeling about the chemotherapy Jett66? My biggest fear is needing it.

I was so relieved when I was told my route would be surgery, radiotherapy and hormone treatment only to be told on Friday they have done an Oncotype test which will determine whether I’ll need chemo first. 

So here I am again waiting for the oncologist appointment to find out the results.

Thanks for explaining what your oncologist said. My husband has been so excited because the cancer is out and think he believes I’m completely better whereas I’ve been a lot more hesitant to celebrate just yet. 

My aim is to try and carry on as best I can but of everything its the chemo that is making me the most anxious. I think its because I dont know what to expect and no one seems to give much info as they say everyone handles it differently.

It's hard to know what to do about work. Also, my son is Year 13 at school so want to try and be as normal as possibly (minus hair) to limit impact on his A levels.

I found making the decision about work the hardest thing as I’ve never been off before and am rarely ever ill.

I teach primary aged children and have now decided that I won’t be going back until I’ve finished my treatment.

This was the decision I came to after a nurse explained to me that covid hasn’t gone away and if I caught it my treatment would be delayed by 7 weeks. I’m not prepared to take the risk. I want all of this over as soon as possible.

It is hard to carry on as normal when all I’ve wanted to do is curl up and stay in bed. I’m lucky my children are older so understand. Having my 3 grandchildren here help me forget what’s going on for a few hours as they keep me busy.

It must have been a hard decision. 

I got a copy of a letter sent to my doctor about what was found.

Had a 16mm grade 3 and a 24mm grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma in 90mm of DCIS. 2nd surgery soon to try and clear margins.

Only radiotherapy was mentioned before my 1st surgery but am now worried as they found grade 3 that I'll need chemo. Not sure what to do but guess no point fretting until I'm told...
