Changing cells around mole. What does this mean?

Hi,

I have stage 3 HS and am on Immunosuppressives which I self inject once a week. I developed a new mole on my back with seemed to turn up over night. My specialist done a biopsy as the medication I take has serious side effects and they were investigating my continuous cough of 6 month. They rang me last week to tell me that it wasn't cancer at this stage but the cells around the mole were changing and that I had to come in next week to have a bigger piece removed to see what's going on. ??? I am confused and terrified, is it cancer or not.... It shouldn't have been a phone conversation with a stranger and I didn't understand half of what she said. I had abcesses on my back, which they drained, had repeat MRI scans of my back because of a really large fat deposit ? below my right shoulder.

Can anyone explain what they mean with " changing cells" ? And "doesn't seem to be cancerous yet but we are worried"  does not make sense to me. Surely its a yes or no ?

Thank you, Tamisara

  • Hello Tamisara

I'm sorry to hear that you've been told you have some cell changes around a new mole. It's good to hear that at this point the biopsy didn't show cancer but it's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things.

We know that this can be a worrying time for many people. If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support that they can ahead of your next appointment.
