Mastectomy

I found out today that I might need a mastectomy. I've been crying all day. In the space of a few weeks it has went from removal of cancer with breast lift to now a reduction or mastectomy depending if we get clear margins or not from my first op to remove cancer. If I need a mastectomy I won't qualify for reconstruction due to my BMI which isn't massively over the requirement. I'm really struggling with it all. I feel that I'm being vain when I should be lucky that my cancer is early and treatable.

  • Hi Twinmum.

Really sorry to hear you have received this news today. Its OK to cry and you are not being vain at all. The idea of losing a part of you is totally terrifying and any breast surgery and cancer diagnosis no matter how early and treatable has a huge effect on a person mentally and physically.

What was it that changed the treatment plan for you?

Be kind to yourself! You never have to apologise for how you are feeling.

    Sending hugs x

  • Thank you for the reply.

When I went to get my magseed ultrasound they ended up doing more biopsies as there was another area they weren't sure about which turned out to be cancerous too. I have 5 small areas over a section of my breast. I do have large breasts so hoping the reduction works out. Xx

  • How are you feeling now?

I had my covid test today and my dye thing is tomorrow.

    Feeling very nervous. Xx

  • Hey!

I'm doing ok. Sore and uncomfortable and the itching is kicking in.....just wanna rip the dressings off and have a good scratch haha. Also tired still but guess that will last a while.

    I didn't have a dye.....what's that for?

Try not to worry (as if that's possible) but honestly the surgery was way less traumatic than expected.

    You've got this! Xx

  • Oh I can imagine how uncomfortable you'll be and the itching omg! Can't wait for that.

I'm dreading having two 4yo boys jumping about me. Thankfully Grandparents are taking them for a couple of nights.

It's the dye injection for lymph node biopsy that they will do along with surgery. They will remove a couple of nodes just to make sure there isn't any spread.

    Keep resting up xx

  • Ah I see! Yes that makes sense. They didn't do anything to my lymph nodes.

Grandparents are a god send aren't they! I have (one!) four year old so she spent two nights with Granny!!! Don't think we would have coped with her here wanting to play with mummy all weekend!!!

Hope tomorrow goes OK and sending all the positive vibes for surgery day xx

  • Yea! So lucky to have great support around us. My Husband's boss has been fantastic and he is working from home this week and taking a couple of days holidays he needed to use up anyway so he'll be able to run after me Haha! It'll make a change.

4 year olds are hard work aren't they? Lol. I'd take the baby stage over and over.

Thank you, will let you know how it all goes. Xx

  • Hard work but fun!!!! My daughter has so much attitude its hilarious! But yes, knackering haha!!

Good to hear your husband's work have been so good. Its another weight lifted isn't it!!

    Lots of love xx

  • Sending hugs and positive vibes for your surgery today (it is today isn't it?!?).

Hope all went well and by the time you read this you will be home, comfortable and being looked after.

    Xx

  • Yes it was today! It went well and I first taken and out and woke in recovery around 12pm. Didn't leave until 4 as I felt really sick and dizzy and also by the time my surgeon came to see me. Been home in bed since about 5pm dozing on and off. Not as dore as I thought, the worst bit is where they took nodes from. Now for the two week wait.

    Hope you're good. Xx

  • Yay!

Really glad that it went well and you are home where you belong to recuperate.

I was the same, really not that sore, so that's good news! Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Have a good sleep! And try not to think about the next wait for results just yet. Concentrate on feeling better!

Wishing you a super speedy recovery. Lots of love x

  • Hey lovely!

    How are you doing?

Hope all is going well and you're not in too much pain and being well looked after.

I'm having a second surgery to fill out the affected breast because there wasn't enough excess tissue to do it in first op. Will be using back fat (lovely) to do a ''flap'.

Surgery was supposed to be tomorrow but my surgeon went and caught covid so now delayed til 7th April.

On the plus side pathology showed clear margins and no invasive! Such a relief!!

Sending hugs and healing vibes your way xx

  • Hey! I'm good thank you? Just a little sore from the lymph node biopsy and some tenderness on my breast. I honestly thought it was going to be worse.

Oh such a pity it's been delayed but glad you know a date. Aw good news your margins are clear, you will be relieved.

I'll find out pathology results on Tuesday then in the next day for surgery.

    You take care xx

  • Thank you! Yes, relieved is an understatement!!

Glad you are doing ok! And huge fingers crossed for your results on Tuesday.

What surgery are you having after? Xx

  • I wont know until Tuesday unfortunately. Hopefully the reduction but could be mastectomy. Praying for clear margins but what will be will be. Xx

  • I will be keeping everything crossed for you! Bring on the reduction but either way you've got this!

Stay strong and have a nice weekend xx

  • Absolutely!

Have a good one too. Xx

  • Hi how are you?

Clear margins so I had the reduction yesterday. Feeling tired and uncomfortable but not in any pain. I'll be having radiotherapy and although my nodes are negative there were traces of breast cancers so I might need chemotherapy depending on oncotype score. Xx

  • Hi!

I'm doing ok! Back to work (from home) today whilst waiting for my second surgery. It's been delayed twice now! Scheduled for 14th April!

Husband has covid so has been banished to the bedroom in a vain attempt to avoid me and our daughter getting it!! Otherwise that'll put paid to surgery for a couple of months!!

So glad that your results showed clear margins and that your reduction went well. Sending positive vibes for quick healing!

Sorry to hear about the traces of BC although really good news that nodes were clear. Do you know when you will get your oncotype score?

Hope your son is coping with it all!!

    Lots of love xx

  • Aw hopefully you and your little girl manage to avoid it and you get your surgery on the 14th.

I was do relieved when I found out it was the reduction and my margins were clear. A little worried about maybe having to have chemo but I'll deal with everything one day at a time. I'm in on Tuesday to have my dressings changed then again the following week. I'll see my surgeon on the 19th.

I have my first oncology appointment on the 21st so hopefully I'll get the results and my plan then.

My boys are coping ok, they don't really understand. They say mummy has a sore boobie and arm. What about your daughter? Xx

  • Sorry sons not son!! Bless them. My daughter is the same. Asks me if my boobirs are feeling better!! And knows she can do gentle cuddles although has taken to cuddling my head recently! Strange child!!!

    Kids are so resilient!!

You started this post due to worrying about having a mastectomy so glad that you got the reduction! Obviously we'd rather none of it but best of a bad bunch lol!

I can appreciate your anxiety about chemo but if it comes to that you will get through it. One step at a time.

Still not sure if I will be having radiation. Not had an opportunity for a proper discussion with my surgeon yet so we will watch and see!

Good luck with the dressing changes. Do you have any drains or a pico 7? Xx

  • Oh yes kids are so resilient. In a way I'm glad they are so young that they won't remember in a few years. Same here gentle cuddles until the forget and want to jump on you.

We got to do what we got to do. Definitely getting better dealing with one thing at a time. I'm usually worrying about the next stage but I'm just concentrating on recovering from this op for now.

    Hopefully you'll know more soon.

I have a pico7 attached to each side so that's fun. Xx
