DCIS - cluster size

Hi,

I have just been dignosed with DCIS, high grade, and would really appreciate some input on cluster sizes. Mine is reportedly 53x20x37 mm. I know my surgeon will discuss surgical options with me at our first appointment, but it would be helpful to know whether this is considered a large cluster size. I am quite small in size and it sounds to me like I would have little left once the diseased area has been removed. At the moment it sounds like they are opting for a breast conserving surgery, but I understand that you can only have reconstruction if you opt for a mammogram.

I'd be most grateful for any input.

Thank you.

  • Hi lovely,

I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma and had surgery 6th January. Like you I am also small busted so was concerned when they suggested a lumpectomy. It was explained that they could fill the gap using a muscle from my back a procedure known as a Latissmus Dorsi flap reconstruction. I'm 3 weeks post surgery and my reconstructed boob looks great.

Do you have an appointment booked with the surgeon yet? I'm sure they will explain everything to you and put your mind at rest a bit.

    Take care

  • Hi Kaye,

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis and hope things continue to go well for you.  I got my diagnosis today so am still just trying to undertand it all. Your response is really helpful and am I very grateful and feel more confident about what is possible if I don't need a masectomy.

    Thanks again and take care.

  • No worries at all my lovely, it's a lot to take in and takes a while to get your head around it all. I've had days where I've been very positive and then other days where it's just all too much.

Listen to the experts but don't be afraid to ask questions if there's something you're not sure about. One thing I learned since diagnosis is that treatments plans can change so be prepared for that and allow yourself time for your brain to catch up with everything.

    Wishing you all the best.

  • Hi Kaye,

I lost my mum to breast cancer about 18 months ago and was with her every step of the way, so I know what you mean about plans changing. I think I have read enough to know that I can't really be sure of much until the results of the surgery. But your message helped.

    Look after yourself.
