Partial Glossectomy and base of mouth removal - TERRIFIED!

Hi guys,

Ive recently been diagnosed with oral sqamous cell cancer and am scheduled to have an operation to remove the turmor from the base of my mouth and part of my tounge and have this area reconstructed from tissue in my forarm. Im 19 years old and Ive never had an operation or general anstetic in my life and im absolutely terrified (although Im more scared of not having the operation and the cancer spreading). I just wondered if there is anyone who has gone though a similar proceduce to talk to about how this is going to feel?

    Hi Serena jasmine

Your post caught my eye as you have jasmine in your name,My name is Jasmin.

Anyway I haven't actualy had to deal with the sort of  health condition you have, but I just wanted to tell you  ,during my chemotherapy I sat next to a lovely man on a few occasions, and he was lovely to chat with.

One of those days we got talking of the kinds of cancer we were having our treatment for I told him I had had breast cancer, and he told me he had oral cancer, and that it had affected his mouth and tongue.  He showed me a scar on his arm ,near his hand ,and said " this is where the surgeon took the skin,to rebuild my tongue.

I could actually see then, the scar was cut like the shape of a tongue.  I was amazed and said " oh my goodness, I would never have known ,you had had surgery in your mouth and tongue, I'd have thought it would of affected your speech, but your talking is great I would never ever have suspected you had,had this kind of surgery". He told me he got through it all remarkably well better than he'd ever imagined .

He did have some speech therapy,as he told me that, but I don't know for how long.

But I thought I'd tell you about this remarkable man, I was in awe of him, he told me the key for him was to stay positive throughout it all.

I've had other operations in my time, and just want to reassured you you will be well looked after ,and always ask for the smallest candular needle called a butterfly I think  ( well they are not actually needles they are plastic I think) .

You will be nervous its only human,we all get like that, but stay positive think to yourself others have had this, and got through it and im determined that I will as well. The sooner you get this done ,the quicker you will be on the road to recovery.

I'm sorry I couldn't give you much information, but as I'd met someone who'd gone through it, and had talked to me about it a bit,and what he had to say  and his positive outcome,I thought it might help ease your mind a little. Hope all gets sorted soon for you, do let us know how you get on. Big  hug (( ((xoxo))) )sent your way .
