Effects of coming off tamoxifen

I had a suspicious breast lump checked out a month ago at the local hospital. To my great relief it turned out to be benign however, the consultant told me that after taking tamoxifen for 10 years I should stop immediately.
So the week after stopping, my joints ached , my digestion altered my hair felt different and I felt exhausted. I really worried about my health.
A good friend who I met through treatment 10 years ago told me about this forum and there it is - there are significant side effects in coming off tamoxifen which nobody tells you about. Come on medics - we can't all be imagining these symptoms. When telling people to stop taking tamoxifen please give them so information about side effects, or consider if it's best to come off gradually.

Can anyone tell me how long it took them to feel normal again ?

  • Hi Norfolknuala and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm really glad your lump was benign although I'm sorry about all the side effects you've been experiencing since stopping Tamoxifen.

Hopefully some of our members who have been through this will share their experiences and advice with you soon but if you'd like to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I really hope you start feeling like yourself again soon.

    Kind regards,
