Father died from undiagnosed Liver cancer

Hi all,

My father passed away suddenly two weeks ago. My uncle had died 5-6 weeks prior from panceratic cancer, and we assumed he'd had a heart attack from the stress and strain of looking after him, plus my dad was very overweight and ate poorly.

However the post mortem revealed a catastrophic internal bleed due to liver cancer, and also cirhossis. He was undiagnosed and had no obvious symptoms. He had been getting a recurring ache in his right should which is a symptom, but we put that down to a strain from gardening - he felt his shoulder go one day.

Has anyone heard of anything like this? I'm a bit of a googler, but I can't find much on such a way of dying.

I'm absolutely broken to pieces, my dad was my best friend, and I spoke to him everyday for an hour. We shared everything, and did so much together.

The fact that my uncle had panceratic cancer, and my dad suddenly dies from liver cancer complications seems unheard of. Can someone's luck be any worse?

How on earth do two siblings end up with cancer at the same stage in their lives? My head is going 24/7 trying to process it all.

Many thanks all.

  • Dai, I'm so sorry that you've lost your father and uncle in such a short space of time. I can't begin to imagine how tough this must be for you or what you're going through at the moment but I hope it helps to know that you're not alone and that our community are here for you.

I'm sure some of our them will offer their thoughts, advice and support to you soon but if you feel it may help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

In the meantime, be kind to yourself Dai and try to take things one day at a time.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
