Post Ileostomy reversal life

After living with a bag for a year I was given the chance of a reversal, which I grabbed with both hands because I had developed a large hernia. At fist I had all the usual 20 trips to the loo a day, but this gradually got better. However, I have come to the point where when I have to go to the loo it seems my bowel is not happy until I have expelled everything from it. This means my stools go from 'normal' to mucus in one episode(as my wife likes to call it), with numerous very urgent trips to the loo, these episodes can last from 2-4 hours. There is no regularity with these episodes they just come as and when they want. I have kept a diary about what foodstuffs don't work for me, mainly anything wind producing (pulses), cooked cheese and salads, I avoid these but the episodes still persist. I have noticed that my digestion system seems to be a lot noisier than it used to be, or maybe I'm more conscious of it now. Anyway the point of this post really is to see if anyone else has/had this issue and have they got around the problem somehow?

  • Hello Charmer

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with some ongoing issues following your reversal. If you've not already spoken to your Consultant or nurse specialist then do get in touch with them to see if they're able to offer any advice.

I know we have some members here on the forum who have been through reversal surgery and hopefully some of them will post if they feel they're able to share some tips and advice. You could also use the forum search function to look for the terms "ileostomy" or "reversal" to see read previous posts.

It may also be worth having a look at this information here on the Colostomy UK website and this page on the Bowel Cancer UK website. I'm sure that both of those charities would have members on their support forums who have been through similar experiences.

You're also most welcome to give our team of nurses a call if you'd like to chat with them. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5pom on 0808 800 4040 and will be back in the office after the bank holiday weekend.

I do hope that things settle for you.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
