Tips: Help with Xerostomia after throat cancer treatment.

It's nearly 2 years post treatment for throat cancer now. It's been difficult. No one really tells you how difficult it was going to be to eat, manage one's mouth, all as a result of the xerostomia & molar clearance post radiotherapy etc.

The best advice I can give is take a day at a time.
Make lots of lovely tasty soups with all the veggies/ meat etc you love.
Eat sandwiches(soft white bread) with butter & mayonaise to lubricate. The soft bread along with the butter encapsulates the filling & helps it to go down. It might be a difficult mental thing to come to terms with. Previously I was a whole meal granary bread/ whole food, veggie & fruit  loving , salad lover but hey... times are different.

When you try meat,  have it slow cooked & tender , & slice it in tiny pieces across the grain.

Try not to panic if food sometimes just doesn't want to go down, just help it along with water. This still happens occasionally because of lack of saliva. I've found Brie cheese gives an emollient effect in mouthfuls of food almost like saliva.

And although there's lots of things I've found along the way to try, the best help has come from Xylimelts a tablet that sticks to a tooth overnight especially & enables a good night's sleep without waking up with a painfully dry mouth. 2  lubricate enough for a whole night.

During the day I use Xtra sugar free gum spearmint gum & if I'm having a really not good day with dryness, I use Xtra gum with a Xylimelt.
Hope some of this helps another person.
