Recurrence of leiomyosarcoma

Hi.  I had a leiomyosarcoma 12 years ago and recovered well.  I was monitored for 5 years and then we all assumed it had gone away.

In November 2018 I went to see my GP about excrutiating pain in my abdomen and was referred to the gastro clinic where this was dismissed as diverticular disease - lose weight and get a healthy diet.  In November 2020 I mentioned this to a nurse who referred me to my GP again who immediately sent me for a scan. The following day my GP rang to say there was a 7cm mass in my abdomen.  I was fast tracked through the oncology system and had the tumour removed on the 9th February 2021.  It was a recurrence of the original tumour.

The reason for this post is that whilst in hospital, I told my story to 3 other patients in my ward - all of them had been diagnosed with diverticular disease before eventually insisting on scans and discovering they had cancer of the womb.

I have great admiration for the gynae and oncology teams but maybe more investigations should be done before dismissing these syptoms?

  • Hello Diane01,

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to come here and share your experience with us. How awful that your symptoms were originally dismissed as diverticular disease and it's good that the nurse then picked up on that and referred you to the GP again and that you were immediately sent for a scan. It's great that things moved fast after that.

It's astonishing that three other patients in your ward were also told they had diverticular disease and it turned out to be cancer. You do make a very valid point that it is important for symptoms to be investigated thoroughly.

I hope you are doing well despite this recurrence and that you have recovered well from your operation.

    Best wishes,
