10th year of taking tamoxifen, told to stop taking now

I am in year 10 of tamoxifen after a mastectomy/ reconstruction and chemo treatment for stage 2 breast cancer discovered in November 2011.

I suffered with hot flushes that were helping in the beginning but soon petered out, but have always struggled with insomnia and find it difficult to avoid weight gain,  and getting rid of that gain is slow and really hard work.

Anyway I've had a call and they have said the risks of continuing the medication are now outweighing the benefits of taking it.

I've tried researching what to do next.  I feel I'd I come off this medication I will be at risk.  Is there surgery that would reduce my hormones or alternative medication or treatment that would keep me safe from recurring cancer? I'm scared to do nothing

  • Hi Jemima71,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can see that this is a bit of a dilemma and I can understand your concerns. I think the best thing if you can is to speak to your doctor about this as they'll typically be best placed to advise on options.

If you'd like to speak to one of our nurses to talk things through, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Otherwise if anyone here has any similar experience to share then hopefully they'll be along soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
