swimming with a prosthesis

Hi

I am waiting for a mastectomy and will have a prothesis. I wondered (hoping) that I will be able to continue swimming? Does anyone have any advice or possible problems that I may encounter please

  • Hi Amanda

I saw your post and just wanted to pop on and share this link to some information we have on our website.

Once you're offered an appointment at the hospital for a prosthetic fitting you may find that the service will give you a swim prosthesis as well as one to wear every day. These are generally shaped slightly differently on the back of the prosthesis to allow water to drain away.

I also know that we've had members post here before about an organisation called Knitted Knockers and whilst they're currently not sending our breast forms due to the Covid lockdown situation they do produce (free of charge) an Aqua Knocker for swimming which I've seen recommended by some members.

And of course, depending on how you feel, it may be that you find a swimsuit that you feel comfortable and confident in to swim without a prosthesis at all. It really is up to you.

I hope that once you're fully recovered from your surgery that you're confident to get back in the pool and carry on swimming.

    Best wishes,
