Sudden hypothyroidism, letrozole, radiotherapy

Hi

I've had low thyroid for 30 years, I take a small dose of levothyroxine and it's always been well controlled with medication. Seven months ago, I had a lumpectomy and radiotherapy. Followed by problems swallowing and acid reflux, so was investigated for esophagitis. They confirmed that there had been some damage to the stomach lining from the radiation. It's healing, thanks to lansoprazole.  But it still feels like something is stuck in the throat when swallowing. Today my GP called to say that my TSH was 'much higher than it's ever been'. It's 28, so in the 'red zone'. Has anyone else experienced fluctuating TSH after radiotherapy? while taking hormone replacement (like letrozole)? Thanks Janet

  • Hello Janet

I'm sorry to hear about some of the problems you've been having since your treatment for breast cancer earlier this year. I'm presuming that your GP has requested some additional tests or arranged a referral to a specialist given that your TSH levels have caused some concern.

I'm unsure if we've any members here who have had similar problems but hopefully if there is then they'll post to share their experiences with you.

If you'd like to speak to one of our nurses about your situation then you're welcome to call them. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope you have some answers soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn

Thanks for getting back. And no - my GP did not prescribe any other tests, despite saying that he'd looked at my history and that it was 'really high' and 'had never been anywhere remotely near that before'. There were some fluctuations last year before I was diagnosed with breast cancer. They kept increasing and decreasing the thyroxin over a period of a year, but would not send me for additional tests even though I asked for them.

I'll try asking why they don't do a full thyroid panel. I'm due to see one of the GPs for routine tests at the end of Oxtober, And will also see if they tested for ferritin, b12, Vit D and folate on this blood test.

    Thanks

    Janet

    Thanks again
