itchy stinging nerve pain

I am having what I can only describe as post mastectomy itchy stinging nerve pain but my mastectomy was 11 years ago!  It started yesterday morning and has been happening more often than not and it's driving me nuts.  I didn't get to sleep until after 2am!  Is there anything I can do to stop it?  Should I contact my breast care nurse?

    Hi Merrymagpie,

Welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear of the symptoms you're having eleven years after your mastectomy.

I have had two bouts of breast cancer in the past 11 years and, have the sort of pain that you're describing from time to time since my last surgery. My first surgery was a lumpectomy, but second time around, the following year, I had a double mastectomy. The side that is sorest is the one that had both surgeries.

If this is a new symptom for you, it sounds as if you should contact your breast care nurse or GP about it. I sincerely hope that you don't find anything untoward, but you are definitely right to make sure that this is so.

Do please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi, thank you for your prompt advice.  I also had a lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy and chemo and then a mastectomy on the same side and chemo three years later.  I've had this 'pain' on a few occasion but never almost constant for three days.  The good news is it stopped as suddenly as it started Sunday night (three days ago) I will phone my breast care nurse ans just get her thoughts on what it's all about.

    Again, thank you.

    Hi Merrymagpie,

I am delighted to hear that the pain has subsided, but agree that it's still wort discussing this with your breast care nurse.

Please let us know what she says.

    Kind regards,
