Tonsil Cancer

I was diagnosed in 2008 with T2 N3 squamous cell carcinoma of the right tonsil. i recieved the usual chemo and radio for 6 weeks. All was well until 4 years ago when i started having problems swollowing food and drink. To cut a long story short i now have Progressive neurological deficit. The radio therapy burnt the top of my spine and took 8 years to come through. I am not allowed to eat or drink anymore and the last 18 months i have lost the ability to speak as the nerve damage has left my tongue paralyzed. Beliebe me, when you have no saliva glands and you are not allowed to drink anything my mouth gets extremely sore. the whole of the inside of my mouth is like old leather. It is now affecting my balance and pretty much move round on my hands and feet. I asked my consultant to remove my voice box (i cant speak anyway) so i would be able to drink fluids. They have declined and im pretty fed up now. I was never told about any of these conditions before i had my chemo radio and has left me unable to do the 3 most basic of things, walk, talk and swallow. Its crap, very crap. I would like to know if anybody else has had simillar problems and if they recieved any surgery.

  • Hi utrinque. You really are going through the mill. Bles you. I have not gone through anything like you, I just read your post and my heart went out to you. I have only had the eating and drinking problem. I have metastatic  palliative lung cancer. However I have a large growth on my thyroid. It presents me from eating because I have such a narrow tract to swoller I have asked timr and time again to remove ther gtroth from my thyroid. As it gets bigger the tract gets smaller. Unlike yourself I can drink and I can eat sloppy things sometimes. Although I almost choke. I can not comprehend how it must be for you. I would suggest you google the patient charter they used to be hung up in the hospital. Although I have not seen one in years. I know they still do them. It's your rights as a patient. From what I remember you have to write to the bord of director. You ask for a netting with your oncology team, not just your oncologist but his or her entire team. You explain what it is you would feel better with they all have to give you a valid reason as to why it's not being done. It could be lack of funding. It could be a medical reason. I do know even if you apply for all your medical records. They have the right to withhold some if they think it will be detrimental to your general heath. If you right to complaints they can also havd a independent review with all members of his or her you as a patient hsvr rights so again you write what you want they have to hsvr a bloody good reason not to have removed your voice box so you can eat relatively normal life. This is what I did when I contacted the complaints department. The one thing I had not done prior. Sit down with your consultant. Ask him why he his against removing your ask him if there's a medical reason or not. You want a full explanation as to why not. If he try's to say make another appointment for another time you say know because you are already having a clinical appointment. If you don't have any appointments sooner rather email address. I do knotthan later. You get someone to phone the oncology  you know the fron desk where you book in for chemo. Phone that number and ask either to be transferred to his Secretery. If they say they can ask for direct number for secretary, phone and tell them you want a appointment to discuss a grievance. Actually if you google your oncologist m. It will normally give you details about him his contact numbers his secretary numbers and email address. Not too sure if they actually pick up the emails to get honest so call his secretary. Ok

let me know how you get on
