Changes to breast after lumpectomy and radiotherapy

Hi everyone,

I finished radiotherapy in April and have a noticeable size difference in breasts. The affected breast is much larger than the non affected one. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm seeing from posts that it can make the breast firmer and smaller. Is this anything to be concerned about?

  • Hello Sazzer,

I hope that you will hear from other ladies on the forum who have experienced this previously. It might be worth bringing this up with your medical team and checking with them whether this is something to be expected after a lumpectomy and radiotherapy. They will be able to tell you more about this I am sure. Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if you wanted to talk things through with them.

I hope you find out more about this soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Sazzer

The only difference I saw in my breasts post op and radiotherapy was some parts were the breast tissue was firmer/hard but my breast surgeon did warn me that rads could change the size and shape of the breast and changes can take a couple of years before they settle but as Lucie pointed out best seeking answers from your breast nurse.

  • Hi Sasser

I'm sorry to hear that you have noticed changes to your breast size post treatment. I have too. I had a lumpectomy and finished radioT in Feb. My breast is much larger than before treatment and so much larger than my other breast. My surgeon said it can take two years for changes to settle and recommended daily massage to help break up scar tissue and reduce fluid retention. I'm doing that but I'm yet to see any improvement at all. I'd heard that radioT usually shrinks breast tissue!

    Wishing you all the best.

  • Hi Maria

Thanks for your reply. It's comforting to know I'm not the only one. I didn't know about massaging the area. Thanks for that!
Good luck with your recovery x
