Tamoxifen and sleep

How have others gotten on with tamoxifen along with zoladex? I am 33 and am on zoladex and tamoxifen and I think I've had one good night's sleep in 3 months. I'm currently trying sage, sunflower oil, a cold pillow thing to ease hot flushes. Only been trying them the past week. It is sending me loopy with no sleep and trying to work. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

  • Hello SarahKate,

Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry these side effects have been causing discomfort but keep going with what you've been doing so far. There are some other diet and general tips here to help with the hot flushes.

    I hope this helps,

  • I used to be on zolex plus the injections now switched to tamoxifen and have to be on them for the next five year

I used to get really bad hot flushes with zolex the main way I dealt with them was to have a fan on in the bed room hope that helps

  • Hi.

I'm on tamoxifen and I was on zoladex but changed to prostap instead.

I have trouble sleeping, I've even bought a room cooler unit for my bedroom to help with the hot flushes. I've found that helps, doesn't stop them but at least I'm cooler.

Do you have hands and feet that ache? My feet feel like I've been running every day and my hands, especially the joints, hurt.

I'm on a sleep program at the moment, over 6 weeks so if anything comes out, I'll let you know. They did say that if you're awake and can't get back to sleep, go into another room and read a book or do a puzzle to tire you out.

    Fingers crossed

  • That would be great if you get any tips on the sleep programme. I find I ache on my back and hips. It comes and goes, but I don't know what is triggering it. I feel generally tired and emotional. I sometimes.still get out of breath going up the stairs. But I can walk for long periods and be fine sometimes. Maybe just need to get my fitness level back up.

I want to run a 10k before the 6th of September so I can get my Manchester 10k medal but walking can be tough sometimes so I'll see. Hopefully.

Let me know how you get on with the sleep programme. Hope the hands and feet have eased up

  • Hi, thanks for the advice. I am trying with a mini fan during the night of I'm struggling and a cool pillow thing. Fingers crossed it might settle.

  • To be honest I’m finding the tamoxifen hot flushes a lot worse than the letozole ones
  • I'll persevere with the tamoxifen for a couple of months and if there is no improvement I'll see if I can switch to the other one. Thanks for the advice

  • Having the same issues and I'll be honest I'm really struggling with it

I am on zoladex injections and I was on exemestance I think it's called from Jan till June didnt sleep much of February till June come off that to try tamoxifen slept well for the 2 weeks I was off it.

I'm 3 weeks into tamoxifen and the hot flushes are awful it feels like I'm gonna collapse I get so hot and literally sweat so bad. Sleep is now non existant again,

  • Hi Missloopy,

I am totally with you on that. Today I had enough and have phoned the doctor for a call back for advice on whether I can take anything to help me sleep, even for a couple of nights. I go through waves where I feel like I'm handling it and waves where I feel like I'm at the end of my tether. It's hard to function with so little sleep. And I've always slept no problem before, so it is a bit of a shock to the system.

I've only ever had tamoxifen. So don't know if it would be worth trying an alternative one.

The cool pillow has definitely helped me. I've been told the sage can take 6 to 8 weeks to kick in. So here's hoping!

  • Hi SarahKate

Ive done the exact same thing today, they have changed me due to the fact that ive been taking sleeping pills for a number of months now and i seem to reach the max dose and then again they stop working

I too have never in my life had a issue sleeping and never been able to stay awake or pull an all nighter but this is something else lol

im glad im not alone in this because at times it feels like im going to have a breakdown
