Letrozole

Hi,

I had breast cancer surgery in January and  have taken Letrozole for 4 months now and have had a number of adverse side affects. I am still dredfully  tired, nautious and i have aching joints. When can expect these affects to stop? I am a single mother with no support at home and I am p finding it hard to get through the week now I'm working full time .

thank you!

  • Hi , January isn’t such a long time ago to be completely over your surgery, so some of tiredness may be due to that. I experienced aching joints for about five months .That was bearable and did eventually subside. , With me it was more  loss of appetite then nausea , that too stopped. The terrible hot sweats, would not call them flushes, have been driving me crazy for four and a half years. So much only last week I called my Breast care nurse and said I want off Letrizol. Fortunately as I an  now low risk despite three primary tumours , the Consultant agreed. .

Unlike others I would not take that risk if I was not so near to coming off the drug anyway as is the standard for my pathology.

Stick with it it is saving your life.

  • Hi Kay,

Thank you for your feedback. There have been a couple of times where I didn't think I could continue using this drug. I guess I just have to accept that my life cannot be lived as before but 5 years is an awful long journey to beat with these side affects!

Pleased that you are getting back to normal. Good luck!

  • I too have had 3 primary cancers, my first at the age of 32 and then again at 42 and again now at 63  and just finished chemotherapy for the 2nd time .. I have been prescribed Letrozole and only been taking it for 2 weeks and I have got terrible tinnitus .. the ringing in my ears at night is quite unbearable .. I have also started with hot flushes, which I haven't had for years since I had a total hysterectomy.   I have spoken to my Oncologist today who has suggested I stop taking the Letrozole for 2 weeks to see if it improves and if it does she will prescribe a different drug. ..

has anyone else had tinnitus with this drug ?

  • Hi Sharon

I’ve been on Letrozole since 2012, 8 years now. The first prescriptions I got from the hospital and felt fine but when I started getting them from my chemist I was obviously given a different brand as the side effects were awful. The main one being joints so stiff and painful, especially my knees, that I couldn’t get out of the bath without help. I did get hot flushes which were just about bearable. It was only by coming on this site that I found out different brands use different fillers in Letrozole which can affect how you feel. I had no idea Letrozole could be different! Apparently there are over a hundred brands. I tried a different brand (Sandoz) and the unbearable joint pain disappeared totally although I still got hot flushes. I now get Accord as Sandoz is discontinued. I was so tempted to stop taking them due to the pain which made me feel like an old woman, but so glad I tried a different brand which had an amazing difference. Please try a different brand as this will make all the difference to you once you find the right one. At the end of my 5 year period, the hospital recommended I continue with them for another 5 years as trials had shown it to be very worthwhile so I was happy to agree. My breast cancer has a reoccurrence period of up to 20 years so I’m not taking any chances by stopping it. Please don’t give up, try a different brand. The only thing that calmed my hot flushes was an antidepressant which is known to reduce them in some women. Good luck x

  • Hi Ruth,

Thank you for getting back to me. After being prescribed several  different brands I am now on Accord which seems to have less severe side affects, although I had a very bad day yesterday for some reason.

Good  luck with the rest of your treatment!
