NHS LETTER

Hi there

I finished my treatment for BC just under an year ago and touch wood I think I'm fine. I had one of the shielding letters too - it came 27 April saying I'm high risk etc- I rang my docs also and they couldn't see why I had letter. However just like some of you I work in a school and am now worried about the risk when we return - surely NHS should know why you were sent a letter - it's making me doubt everything now - do I go back to school or do I sheild?

  • Hello sunandsea,

First of all, congratulations for finishing your BC treatment and I am glad everything is fine. This is excellent news. I’m sorry I can’t give you detailed information about whether you should be considered vulnerable, but the criteria for cancer patients is carefully defined, based on those with greatest clinical risk.  Some patients may receive a letter because they have other conditions that place them in the highest risk category.

If you’re unsure of your risk and what measures you should be taking, or you don’t think you fit into any of the categories listed on the government website, you should speak with your hospital specialist.  If this is not possible, you should contact your GP and ask whether you should go back to school or if you should avoid it. Aside from cancer treatments, there are other conditions and factors that can make people more vulnerable. There is also some information about coronavirus on the Cancer Research UK website here.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,
