Vulnerability to coronovirus

I have received a text message from the NHS saying that I extremely vulnerable to serious illness if I contract the coronovirus. In August last year I had a lumpectomy and also had 3 lymph nodes taken. I had chemo before and after which was completed in October followed by radiotherapy. I had complete response to chemo so was all clear pre-op and fell well. I didn't think I figured in the criteria outlines as extremely vulnerable so unsure what reason I have received text. Can anyone shed any light please?

  • Hello Beckycat,

The NHS will be writing to everyone in England who is considered to be extremely vulnerable.  You can read the advice they will be given and the types of people they will be contacting on the Public Health England website here. I think given that you have been sent a text message, it would be a good idea to contact your health team and asking them whether you are definitely considered high risk.

We have some information about coronavirus on our website here.

As the situation changes and more evidence become available about corona virus and its impact, the information may change so we would suggest that you check the government information on the link above from time to time.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

  • Hi,

As advised, please speak with your clinical team. Quite a few cancer patients I know finished their treatment over the last 12 months & they have received the text, however one who finished the same treatment 2 years ago hasn't received it. I believe that they class vulnerable as those currently receiving chemo or immunotherapy or have recently finished receiving it. Possibly 'recently' is classed as within 12 months & this may answer why you have received the text. Please let us know what your team say as it will be helpful to other forum members too.

    Best wishes,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)

  • I'm presuming their only sending letters to those that have finished their treatment? So they are aware they are still vulnerable
