Coughing after lung lobectomy

My dad had half of his left lung removed 6 months ago. He had non small cell lung cancer stage 2. They found no trace of it in his lymph nodes. He is doing well apart from the daily discomfort. The only thing that really bothers him is the cough he now has. The nurses and doctors have all said it can be a side affect after surgery. He is having his 6 months check up CT scan next week. As a family we are all on pins. He had an X-ray about 7 weeks ago because of the cough and that came back clear. Is anybody on here who has had this type of operation that has suffered a cough since having it done?
Thanks

  • It means we're all nervous about his scan and the results.

  • Hi lucieloucb

I could have almost written your post word for word.

I hope things have improved with your dad and the results were clear.

Would you be able to share what the outcome was, in particular what the approach was to treat the cough?

    Many thanks

    David

  • Hi David.
My dads CT scan came back clear. When we were given those results the Dr asked how he was feeling and so on so my dad mentioned his cough. The Dr thought it might been reflux due to the movement of things internally during the operation. He arranged a barium X-ray which confirmed reflux and also a hiatus hernia. The hernia is due to the coughing and reflux. They have prescribed him some tablets for the reflux and put him on gaviscon. No further operations required unless it bothers him. He is happy with that.

I hope that helps. But I'd say if you are worried about yourself or somebody else go and get checked out.

  • Hi Lucie

Thanks so much for your response, I'm very pleased to hear that your dad's scan was clear and that the coughing was treatable.  I hope it clears up very soon.

I was asking since my dad also had the same symptoms after the same operation and is also having his 6 month check up later in the month.  We have all been getting more worried about the cough that just doesn't seem to go away.  I showed him your message and it's definitely helped.  Of course everyone is different and we don't know what his outcome will be, but I have read a bit more about reflux and your experience is reassuring, especially that it seems treatable.

I'll try and remember to update this thread with what happens, in case it helps someone else.

    Thank you again

    David

  • It is such a worrying time leading up to the scan. My dad has found the lack of information on what to expect afterwards hard to deal with. He knew he would be breathless but feels there was not enough info given for other potential complications. His Macmillan nurse agreed with him.

Good luck to your dad and family!!

  • Hi Lucie

I was just reading your last message, and I feel the same about the lack of information after surgery and chemo. I had my full lung removed in June last year, then went on to have chemo which finished in October last year. I am doing really well and have my first appoinment at the end of the month for my three month check up, I was under the impression that every check up appiontment would be a scan, but I have an appointment for an x-ray.  Does this sound right to you, I do not know who to conact to ask.

very gratefull for any feedback Scooby

  • Hi Scooby

It sounds like you've had a rough time I'm really glad you're doing well.

My dad had a ct scan 6 months post op in November then it's 1 every year but I'm not sure how long for.

I think the reason why they can't scan you constantly is because it's to risky because of the radiation the scan machine gives off.

I wish my dad could have a scan every 6 months it would definitely ease the worry!

I hope everything continues to go well for you!!

  • Hi, I had middle lobe right lung removed start of year. My cough seems persistent and annoying but surgeon made little of it and it is normal I think / hope. No sign of blood so good as far as I can tell. Hope this helps.

  • Hope that everyone is doing OK.

I had a right lung bilobectomy in January 2019 and have been coughing ever since, so can give you a list of explanations I have been given!

In the beginning they thought the coughing was caused by build-up of fluid, which they drained.

I have PET scans every 3 months (it was metastatic melanoma in the lung, not primary lung cancer) which seemed to show that the tumour wasn't returning, but a recent CT scan suggested that the surgery itself had caused scarring and issues that might contribute to coughing. Everything inside gets pulled over to one side and stretched!

Reflux, I was told, might be the cause, but also can develop when you cough alot. One of the signs of this is apparently coughing when you bend over.

Apparently coughing can be caused by microscopic nerve damage to the airways and becomes a kind of reflex, so you cough in response to any small stimulus. I have now been given codeine-containing meds to try to stop the reflex coughing, and also told to see a speech therapist who can apparently train you to avoid coughing.

I feel for you all as it is such a worry, wondering why, but also coughing can be so debilitating and affect your sleep, physical fatigue, continence, mood...

    Take care :)
