Returning to work

Hi

Just wondering how soon people have returned to work following their last chemo? I just can't wait to get back and into a routine but obviously don't want to over do it. Any experiences/suggestions are most welcome

  • Hi horse.dog.workmad,

I think most tend to favour a return where work hours slowly increase over time but it's different for everyone depending on how their individual cancer journeys have been. I'm sure some of members will pop by soon to tell you more but you can also find other discussions to join in on about this by using the 'search forum' option in the blue bar above.

I hope your return to work goes well and is able to give you back that sense of normality and routine you're seeking.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi,

You know how frustrating it is when people say “it depends”? Well, the answer is that it depends.

My chemo infusions were on Thursday with daily tablets and for the first few weeks I was back working on Monday. Then it hit me like a freight train! I stayed off work for the rest of my chemo, three weeks after my last infusions I took my last chemo tablet and flew to Goa to convalesce on Palolem beach for three weeks.

It depends on what chemo you’re on, how badly the side effects feel, the type of job, how supportive your boss and colleagues are, your mental/emotional state and how badly damaged your immune system becomes.

On the plus side - most of my side effects had gone within 3 weeks of chemo ending AND for me the chemo worked!

    Good luck!

  • Hi

Thanks for sharing... and tbh Goa sounds like the best sort of plan lol.

I know I'll have to wait and see how it goes... I'm probably getting a little ahead of myself as my last chemo () is at the end of this month. Mentally I really feel I need to be back at work... my employer has been great and insisted I take time off despite my protests! So there's no pressure but I guess it feels very much like getting back to normal.

Fab news that your chemo has worked. Things are going well so far so I'm just thinking positive thoughts

    thanks

  • it mainly depends how you feel i had a session every 21 days and for about four days eather side of session i was OK and at work, like you i was fed up with doing nothing as long as your careful about bugs you should be OK, best wishes for the future.. Billy

  • As I am self employed time off wasn't an option so took 5 days off for both ops and never stopped working.

i envied people having treatment at the same time as me who had a year's paid leave
