Tamoxifen

I have been on Tamoxifen for just over 18 months I am still suffering with the side-effects but I am too frightened to stop taking it as I have a very strong family history of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. It’s starting to affect my every day life at the moment I am in bed with virual symptoms but I’m sure it’s the Tamoxifen.  Will the side-effects ease as I will be taking Tamoxifen for the next 8 1/2 years.  I am in such a dilemma as I don’t want to stop taking Tamoxifen because if it’s the cancer returns I will never know if it’s because I stopped taking it.   Sorry for the long message but I’m feeling very low at the moment and need to get this off my chest as the only surviving female in my family  has had breast cancer twice so I’m so frightened it’s going to come back.   Has anyone else had the side-effects long-term and how did you cope?

  • Hi Lol1972,

Welcome to the forum and I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with the side effects of your medication so much.

Have you spoken to someone about the side effects that you're experiencing? It's certainly worth contacting your consultant, nurse specialist or speaking to your GP for a referral to discuss things. It may be that they're able to offer another drug, alter the doseage or give your something to help with the side effects.

If you use the saerch function on the forum (magnifying glass in the blue bar at the top of the page) and search for the term "tamoxifen" you'll find a number of other posts from lafies who have experience with side effects. I'm sure that if you add a post to one of the threads you'll be able to chat with others who can share their experiences.

If you'd like to speak to one of our team of nurses for some advice and support then do give them a call. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
