Boyfriend is prostate cancer free, can we have children now?

So my boyfriend had prostate cancer at age 23 which is very rare but since it was early stages he managed to get cured with just hormone therapy. He told me his doctor said we’d be able to have kids but I’m not convinced. It’s been a month since he was declared cancer free and He still has a hard time getting an erection which I don’t fuss about (his health is most important) but I’m curious if anyone has been through prostate cancer and has been able to easily conceive with their partner after hormone therapy? The medication really affected our sex life but it has gotten a lot better recently but I’m worried he could have some damage from the treatment.

I google it but it only shows results from people who had their prostate removed or radiotherapy but my boyfriend only had hormone therapy but it always says that men have a hard time having kids after prostate cancer.

any advice or personal experience trying to conceive with someone who has been through prostate cancer? I know it’s a rare case because generally older men get prostate cancer.

  • Hi Diiana,

I'm really pleased that your boyfriend's prostate cancer has been successfully treated but can understand your concerns about how it may affect your plans for starting a family.

Hopefully some of our members who have gone on to have children after having treatment for prostate cancer will share their experiences with you soon but maybe it would be good for you and your boyfriend to book an appointment with his doctor so you can discuss this in more detail and get the answers to any other questions playing on your mind.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this already, but the online community on the prostate cancer uk website may be able to help you with this as well so do have a look in when you can.

    Kind regards,
