HELP Bowel Cancer- Ileostomy Problems.

Since having a re-section for Bowel Cancer. I am suffering with a number of problems with both discharge from my bottom and Stoma lump, which has slowly grown in size from almost a flat stomach to large `Mound` around the Stoma area.

I am extremely concerned that when I have the reversal operation, I will not have any control of my bowel, as I`m unable to control the mucus discharge at any time. I try squeezing my bottom and cheeks together, but just ejects the mucus at any time? It is not weeping out, but a single discharge just like going toilet. Is there anything I can do stopping this maybe an exercise or medication/treatment?

Also concerned about the large lump that I have around the stoma which is now approximately 140 to 150 mm in size.

I have spoken to my GP but they do not have sufficient knowledge about the condition.

Hoping that someone can offer a suggestion.

Many Thanks

  • I'm sorry about the problems you're having at the moment Virgil.

Do you still have any contact details for the medical team or the stoma nurse that looked after you when you had this procedure done? If so maybe you could try getting in touch with them to discuss what's going on. Our cancer nurses are just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040 if you'd like to chat with them about this as well. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

You may be able to get some advice from the bowel cancer UK website and their online community so it may be worth having a look on there too.

    All the best,
