Burning prickling itch down right arm

i had a left mastectomy four years ago with reconstruction and reduction of my “ normal “ breast. I take tamoxifen. I am 53. I have suffered with this painful irritating burning prickling itchy arm that burns and makes my arm look like it’s been sunburnt. It’s driving me nuts and ruining my life as I don’t sleep well am tired and irritable and constantly scratching my arm making my skin very tender. Has anyone else experienced this ?  Thank you x

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Ada although I'm sorry about the symptoms you've been experiencing.

Hopefully some of our other breast cancer ladies will be along soon to share their advice and experiences with you but as it's having such a big impact on your life do keep seeing your doctor until you get some answers. If you feel like your current doctor isn't taking you seriously then maybe you could try seeing a different doctor for a second opinion.

Our cancer nurses are just a phone call away if you'd like to chat with them about this as well. You can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I hope you're able to get some peace from this soon Ada.

    All the best,

  • Hi Ada

i read this as your symptoms sounds just like mine but I had a Axilla node clearance when I had my lumpectomy (have since had mastectomy) 6 months ago. Did you have the node clearance as I think the symptoms can last along time? Do you have lymphodoema?

It may be worth contacting the breast care nurses as it sounds as if it’s really bothering you, mine is frustrating but doesn’t happen very often. I did read that tapping the skin can sometimes help relieve rather than scratching,it might be nerves regrowing(?) and so a nerve pain relief (gabapentin) might help. But I could be totally wrong.

I really hope it gets gets resolved soon
