Plea for help with continuous and worsening pain.

I had my left kidney removed approximately 8 years ago.  Since then I’ve had serious pain.

First of all I put it down to the after effects of the op (radical nephrectomy), but it never went away.  I saw my surgeon regularly but he always said everything was fine.  I could feel a swelling building up and it never goes away and it’s got worse and is excruciatingly painful when walking, etc.  Simple job of preparing a meal became unbearable.   It’s got worse over time and there’s little respite. The swelling is quite bad now, ball shaped (football!) and there’s a very tender point when side palpated.

To help with pain I have been put on 6-monthly radio frequency ablation.  It helps a little and takes the edge off.  It’s supposed to last six months but it unfortunately it does not.  It’s now 18 months since last treatment.  Hospital keeps cancelling.  I was due to have a pain blocking injection to keep me going this week.  That too has been cancelled.

Has anyone any experience of this pain?  Any ideas to help me please?   I really can’t keep going.  My life seems over.  I can do very little.  My doctor is sympathetic but nothing on offer.  I want my life back!!!!!

  • Hi Su and welcome to the forum.

Daft question but have you made a formal complaint about the frequent cancellations/postponements and the resulting chronic pain?

Sometimes hospitals just don’t join up the dots and fail to realise the unintended consequences of cancelling or postponing individual interventions.

If things get too bad you could just present at A&E - or at least threaten to!

Having worked in the NHS I am convinced that there is often an assumption that people must be OK if they haven’t complained or presented at A&E as an emergency patient. Soldiering on and putting up with a cr@p service is self-defeating as the squeaky wheel gets all the oil.

I hope you get the pain relief you need soon.

    Good luck

    Dave
