Lack of energy after cancer treatment

I had breast cancer twice within 12 months and had two years of treatments. It’s now two years since I finished treatment. I’m in my late 40’s and was always a very active and energetic person. Now any little thing I do soaks up my energy. Does anyone think this is as a result of treatment or is it an age thing? I thought at this stage I should be back to myself. I do walk every day but energy is not improving. I’d appreciate any advice, please, thank you

  • Hi there ... firstly high 5 to you kicking cancers butt .... that's our goals ...

Since my breast cancer last year, I've chatted to lots on here and at home ... and the one thing we seem to suffer from is the body just seems to drain of energy ... myself, I feel like a battery .. when full I can do stuff for couple of days .. then on half battery , so slow down ... then when battery flat have to spend at least 24 hours total rest ... then back to fully charged again ...

I used to feel really guilty, now I have given in, and enjoy with a few films or catch up t.v ... or on here ..and nearly everyone I've chatted too, say their energy level goes down really quickly, even after years .. so don't worry, find the level you can get too .. and recognise when your body says slow down or stop .. l know your still quite young .. but at least wer still here .. so giving in to our new energy levels is a small price to pay ...

So be kind to your self ... do what you can.. know when you need a brake .. and know we may just have to live with this the rest of our lives .. but it could be a lot worse .. so take every day .. and chill .. life is too short... and live in the day .. whatever that brings ..  Chrissie x

Thank you for your reply. You have been more helpful than you may realise.

I find it very hard to chill, relax and rest, but I guess I need to learn for my own sake.

    Thank you again

    Hi Luckylass,

I have to sympathise with your lack of energy. Sadly, this is all too common with a cancer diagnosis.

Like you, I had 2 bouts of breast cancer within a year and was totally exhausted. It is now 8 years since I was first diagnosed. I have had a lumpectomy followed by Tamoxifen and the second time I had a double mastectomy followed by Letrozole for 6 years. I stopped taking Letrozole in July 2017 and it is only within the past few weeks that I have begun to feel better.

Whether this is a flash in the pan or a long-term improvement I don't know. I am still tired from time to time, but not the total exhaustion I have had previously.

Like you I found it very difficult to relax, but at my worst I didn't have an option, I could fall asleep anywhere. I also had both knees replaced 2 years ago and joined an exercise class for people in rehab from serious illneses. These were gentle stretch and balance exercises and I believe that these helped with my energy levels.

I guess what I am saying is that there is still light at the end of the tunnel, so don't give up just yet.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Yes, it’s so good to find a site like this to find people like you who care about others.

Exercise is good, I do walk most days but I will join an exercise class this winter and see how I go.

Thank you so much, best wishes to you
