Post radiotherapy bleeding

I have had small discharges of blood from my backpassa

ge since having radiotherapy. In the past they have been small spots and smears. A sistoscopy in July 2017 indicated that there was nothing to worry about and this happens after such treatment. In the last few weeks however these discharges have become heavier and the blood is almost black in colour. they can happen with little warning and I am worried when I leave the house. I am due to see my oncologist next month, but am unsure whether I should seek advice in the meantime. Can anyone advise?

  • Welcome to the forum 12pevensey although I'm sorry for the reason you find yourself here.

I'd say if you're worried about the symptoms you're experiencing then the best thing to do would be to let your GP/medical team know so they can look in to this for you but if you would like to chat to someone before doing this then do give our cancer nurses a call. Their telephone number is 0808 800 4040 and are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. Alternatively, you can make a new post about this in their section of the forum just here.

  • Hi 12,

After radiotherapy to my pelvis I developed radiation colitis which turned to sepsis. Emergency op to remove sigmoid colon and woke up with 2 bags.

My advice is to contact your medics soonest and look out for high temperature, changed bowel habit, bleeding, which you have, and any new symptom. Radiation side-effects can occur up to decades after treatment and can be severe. If they hadn't operated on me, and it was touch and go as to whether they would, I'd have been dead within 24 hours. Indeed, my family had all said their goodbyes.

    Best Regards
