Immune booster

Hi. I have follicular Non hodgkins and have been clear for 10 years. However, every winter I spend the whole time ill.  Does anyone have any advice on how to boost the immune system. I have always believed in diet and vitamins and it'  not working, but wonder if there are other options people might have tried?

Thankyou cat

  • Hi cat,

Personally, I eat cakes. Cream cakes. I've no idea what they do to my immune system but I haven't relapsed yet.

  • Hello Catho,

I am sorry to learn that the winters are so difficult for you. Our moderators wondered if we could come up with any ideas that might help. But to be honest I am not sure that I can suggest much that you have not already thought of yourself.

It is known that a healthy balanced diet is important for the normal functioning of the immune system, but there is not any scientific evidence to suggest that any specific ‘superfoods’ or supplements are beneficial. As well as diet there are other things that might help, but some of these things may be easier said than done. But try to get enough sleep, take moderate exercise and if you can try to manage the stress that you might have in your life.

You could also ask your GP to check your vitamin D levels. When they are low the immune system may suffer.

Smoking and drinking and alcohol are not too good for the immune system. As for the eating of cream cakes, I would imagine that they are good for morale and so having the occasional treat is no bad thing.

I am sorry that I cannot be more helpful. Do get back to us if you have any other questions. If you would like to telephone our freephone number is 0808 800 4040. We are here from Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am to 5pm.

    All the best,
