Letrozole

Hi I’m new to this forum.  I have had breast cancer twice, 2nd time round was in the same breast.  Because of this I decided to go for a double mastectomy to avoid a “3rd” time.  First time round I was put into Tamoxifen for 5 years, apart from the common side effect of hot flushes & mega weight gain  I felt well on then.  However, I’m now on Letrozole, have been taking them for just over 12 months and am experiencing just about every single side effect listed and more.  Recently I have been getting excessive sweating, dull like growing pain in my left leg from hip to  knee, excessive fatigue and more recently bouts of Vertigo & Tinnitus which are so debilitating I keep having to take time off work.  I’m interested to find out  if anyone else is experiencing this on Letrozole?  I also have aching joints which I can cope with, excessive itchiness all over the body, mainly at nigh but I take antihistamines for that.

With all of this going on it’s making me feel like a complete hypercondriact... is anyone else experiencing all of this and how do you cope?

I look forwards to your comments xx

  • No.  But it was all I wanted to know.  And with changing medication it has proved to be correct.   I've gone from being virtually crippled, struggling to walk downstairs first thing, to walking miles in the Alps.  I'd recommend people to push for a changed of medication.  Took about 4 months for an improvement/cleared out of my system.

    Hi Claire,

I'm glad that changing medication has made such a difference. We all know our own bodies best and, sometimes we have to push for a change. I'm sure that you're glad that you did.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi I to am on the drug and seriously considering stopping as its crippling me. I am nearly 50 this year and feel about 80.my mom can do more than me and its frustrating me. I can't sleep either cuz I'm just too stiff and aching all the time. O dnt know wot to do with myself. I have oesteopenia as well which is bone thinning and have been given adcal to try prevent it Turing into oesteoporos. My job is killing me to do as I clean rooms in a hotel have only gone back 2 days a week and I'm struggling. I'm always tired as well. My whole body right down to my fingers just hurts to bend and touch. Have had blood tests and nothing so my doctor guessed it might b the cancer drug. I have to have zolofex injection as well as letrozole is for post menopausal and I hadn't even started menopause. I have only been on this drug about 9 months and it's doing this to me. But prior to that I was put on tamoxifen but that caused tummy swelling and cysts in my breasts which terrified me so couldn't cope with that. I just dnt know what my outcome would b if I stay on this drug 4 more years or if I come off it so soon. DAMNED IF I DO N DAMNED IF I DON'T. I am trying so hard to stay positive but its so hard sometimes when my body is failing me. It even hurts if I walk for periods of time even slowly.

  • Hi Shazbo,

there is a wealth of info on this thread about Letrozole, I keep reading more and more since I stopped, more than I read before I stopped, please speak to your doctors. There are alternatives. My biggest problem was that I felt so old, constantly, not just joint pains etc. So many ladies are suffering exactly the same and yet they are made to stick with it. Why? Is it cheaper? Or just a lack of time or sympathy to find you an alternative. I don't hear any positive comments on Letrozole.
I was lucky to have a new consultant who was so concerned that I had given up altogether that she gave me a new drug called Ezetimibe, also called Aromasin. I have been so much better, more like my old self and most of all not like an old woman any more. It's not perfect, nothing ever is, I have a few hot flushes now which I thought I was done with but I can cope with that. I don't sleep as well as I would like but I can't honestly say that's the tablets though. Be firm with your consultant, or be hysterical, cry or rant, but get it changed. You can't be any worse off.

it does take a few months for the Letrozole to clear your system so be patient, I started on Anastrozole, then Tamoxifen, then Letrozole, then refused to take anything until I had Aromasin and finally I can cope with life again. I am almost 5years clear now and life is good.

    best of luck.

  • Hi snowdropthatnks for your reply glad to hear u clear 5 years I'm only just over my 1st year and want to give up on thedrug so badly I am going to have to ring my cancer nurse again and I'm at my doctors again 20th as she needs to fill in part of a form that universal credits want as I am being made to have a medical with them as the past year I have had help from them. I can't c the point in it all as I have gone back to work. 2 days a week. It's bloody killing me to do my job but it's all I know. Also I was put on tamoxifen 1st and that didn't agree with me either for different reasons. I just can't believe a tiny pill can cause so much discomfort

    Hi Shazbo,

I totally agree with Snowdrops. Call your breast care nurse tomorrow and ask her if there is anything else you can take. Tell her how you feel and see what she can suggest.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi there. My experience of Letrozole is bad. I have found that specific exercises and particularly Pilates is helping with the pain and mobility but means religiously doing a session every day. Has anyone found that warm weather helps??

  •

    Hi Sueshi,

I can't say that I noticed much difference with the changes in different weather.

    KKind regards,
