Post surgery/radio breast cancer

Hi, My surgery was in June and I finished my radiotherapy a couple of weeks ago. Is it normal for the boob in question to still feel lumpy and sore when you press in some places? I'm freaking out because it's lumpy due to the lumpectomy and I'm just not sure what's normal and what isn't any more. Thanks

  • I was told to expect changes and that my breast might shrink in size or appear less smooth after Rt. Don't know if that helps ir not really.

    Hi Cassie,

Welcome to Cancer Chat, although I'm sorry for the reason that has prompted you to join us here. I have had 2 bouts of primary breast cancer. The first was 7 years ago and the second a year later. I had a lumpectomy followed by Tamoxifen the first time and a double mastectomy followed by Letrozole the second.

I had a few false alarms after my lumpectomy with my breast feeling lumpy, as you describe. On each occasion, it proved to be scar tissue. It can be difficult to be sure what is going on at this stage. If you are not sure, why not contact your breast care nurse for advice or see your GP?

Even now, after my double mastectomy, I have returned to get things checked out, but so far all has been ok. You will gradually come to know what feels right and wrong, but your scarring will still be drawing tissue together under the surface and it is difficult to know exactly what is happening until it has healed up completely.

Don't ignore anything that feels wrong. You are always better to be safe rather than sorry. Please keep in touch and let us know what you decide to do.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
