Why do I still have no hunger for food

Nearly a year on since my treatment finished I still don't get hungry, I am still forcing food down but not in get amounts but as often as I can .by the way my treatment was for throat cancer which I did lose taste and Saliva which the taste has come back a bit but the saliva is not that great so I suffer with dry mouth badly, but back to my point I just don't get the urge to eat it all seems so mechanical now .im sure I'm not the only one and it drives my partner spare as she thinks I just don't want to eat but I do I just don't feel hungry.is it just me or am I not alone?

  • Hi Superbean,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation but you're still trying to eat food which is great. Have you spoken to your medical team about this? If not do get in touch with them as they may be able to help and provide some alternative food options for you. Our cancer nurses may be able to help with this as well so do give them a call. Their number is 0808 800 4040, which is free from a UK landline, and are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

We have a few members that have had throat cancer on the forum so hopefully they will be post soon but the one that springs to mind instantly is [@Vatch]‍. They have written a blog about their throat cancer journey and now that I've tagged them in this post I'm sure they will be along soon to offer any help and advice they can.

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi superbean

welcome to the forum and the world of a throats cancer survivor

my wife also has a go at me for the change in my eating habbits since treatment ... you see i have gone right off chocolate ... I no longer enjoy the taste and the sugar content is just too much for my teeth .... so whereas pre treatment we would sit down of an evening and share a bar between us .... now she has the bar to herself ... and she is blaming me, that I've made her eat the whole thing .... of course I apologies

but seriously, what you likes before goes out the window and it's like tasting food again for the first time

bread is out for me so I have gone to wraps with lots of mayo and pickles

i loved a cheese and pickled onion sandwhich, but can't do pickled onions any more....so have gone to to gherkins

I have to have liquid with every meal ... just to get the food down

and the big change is that I don't snack anymore ... crisps are out, so dunking a digestive in my coffee is a good subsitute

    moist foods basically

so how are you doing with it all

    vatch

  • Hey Superbean8 , I don't have throat Cancer but I do have Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia. Since I've been on my Chemotherapy which has been just over 18 months now I've had no appetite at all. I have been diagnosed with malnutrition and been put on to milk shake supplements but my weight ballooned out of control and I stopped them with my GPS consent. I just don't think to eat. Like you and the other person I loved Chocolate now I can't touch it at all. I eat small meals my husband prepares to keep him and my doctors Happy but if I was left on my own I don't think it would even cross my mind to eat something as I never feel hungry anymore. So No your definitely not alone. xxx

  • Hi vatch

thanks for reply I agree chocolate crisps everything I used to like has gone ,now it's porridge yoghurt with seeds and raisins a bit of paste with a lot of sauce and bananas I do manage half a brown bread sandwich with soft cheese but I drink about half a litre of water with it and it takes 20 mins to eat by which time I'm bored out of my mind with it lol I carry water everywhere as my throat can go dry within a second. I must be eating really healthy because I have lost a little weight and look like a greyhound, but the old brain says it's the cancer just moved somewhere else lol Im still at the hospital every six weeks and all seems well. I have tried to eat meat wow I just throw it around my mouth and it gets dryer and dryer lol. They also removed some of my back teeth as  a just in case measure with really does not help I got some false ones to put in but it like someone else is trying to chew for you lol.at least it's nice to know that's it's not just me going through this again thanks for the reply cheers.

  • Lol that should have read pasta with sauce haha

  • Hi newlands

thanks for your reply its funny how eating is no longer a thought or feeling, when the joy of it has been taken away and it is now just an mechanical event to keep going for the day .i just try to eat little and often, I put the tv on maybe the news to take my mind off what I'm doing and just chew away it seems to work as I find food boring . I hope you are keeping well and it is nice to know I'm not alone in my way of thinking. P.s I just bought some double Cornish ice cream to try and I now drink a lot of full fat milky coffees good luck and keep in touch cheers superbean.
