Letrozole or alternative

I've been on Letrozole since February having previously been on Tamoxifen.  I feel so much worse with all number of side Effects?.  I want to go back to Tamoxifen or any other alternative.  I have now developed unexplained shoulder pain and can only think it's the letrozole.

Has anyone else had a bad reaction to Letrozole

Big gentle hugs to everyone xxx

  • Hi,

I have been much better on Aromasin, yes I have joint pains still but I have had two knee replacements in the last two years, long term arthritis after 50 years of playing badminton, and also a shoulder replacement that the consultant said was consistent with damage from radiotherapy, not my badminton arm either. However these pains are nothing like the pain I suffered whilst on Letrozole, the long muscles in the legs were unbearable. When I stopped the improvement within a week was so great I refused to go back. These pains have not come back. I had a few hot flushes in the early days but these too have gone now.  It says something that I was prepared to take nothing at all rather than go back on Letrozole, and a locum doctor was happy to let me! My new consultant however was not happy and prescribed Aromasin and I can honestly say it is the best I have tried, when I have fully recovered from my last knee replacement which was only January I expect my joint pains to be milder.

we all have different side effects depending on underlying conditions but with Letrozole I could barely walk at times let alone sleep, even my post op pain was not the same as the muscle aches from Letrozole. Ask if you can try Aromasin, also called EXEMESTANE. Hope this helps.

  • Hi

having the same issues on Letrozole after Tamoxifen.
Wondered what medication if any you moved onto

  • I have been taking letrozole for six months the side effects are awful.  Has anyone changed to another tablet please that doesn't have the same side effects

  • Hi,

there is a wealth of information on here about Letrozole, just go backwards you'll find it. Briefly though lots of people have suffered lots of side effects. There are many alternatives, I'm now on Aromasin, also called Exemestane and I don't have the muscle pains I used to have. Ask for a change, you don't have to suffer in silence, speak to your consultant.

    good luck.

  • Hi, I've been on lettozole for about 20 months.

my side effects have got worse over the last 4 months.I really some days do not feel like the same person. I have terrible heartburn. Low mood & terrible joint ache esp the knees if I have been sitting for a while. Some days I feel really awful & sad. I just don't feel like me.
I think I will prob need to see GP. But scared to try an alternative

  • Hi,

please don't suffer in silence, look back at all the posts on Letrozole, or even just my posts. I suffered too  and actually gave up altogether but then I had a change of consultant who listened and found me something new, in my case Exemestane, also known as Aromasin. The change was so much better. I'm now coming up to 8 years clear and no longer take anything, with my consultant's blessing. I stopped medication this summer, and am now discharged.
please talk to your consultant or his secretary, often quicker than going through GP.
    best wishes,

    sue

  • Hi,

thank you for your kind words.
we are all in the same boat. We all have our own storys. I'm going to see if I can get my oncologist appointment brought forward.

thank you again. Very pleased for you.
