Tamoxifen

I had a lumpectomy  on 23rd  September  also had the all clear last week . I have the mirena coil for the past 13 years due to very heavy periods  and it has worked  fantastic  for me but my consultant  wants me to have it removed and start on tamoxifen , I am really anxious  about this as I don't  want my heavy  periods  to return. I should be ecstatic  with the all clear news but i'm an emotional  wreck

  • Hello Shak,

It's not uncommon to feel emotional after getting good news. I'm sure you've been through a rollercoater of thoughts and feelings over the last weeks.

You could give our nurses a call to chat to one of them about your concerns regarding tamoxifen/mirena. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 (free to call from a UK landline). It may also be worth talking to your consultant/GP about a referral to a gynaecologist to see if there are other ways in which your heavy periods can be managed if you're unable to use the mirena any longer.

Hopefully someone will be able to give you some information that you're happy to try.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Shak. I'm going through exactly the same has you! Had a lumpectomy on the 24/816 I also have the marena  coil and taking tamoxifen. My GP and consultants all said it was ok for me to keep using the coil. I don't know if this helps. You might already have the answers you need but as far as I know it's ok to still keep your coil.

  • Great news to be all clear x

I know exactly how you feel, I actually cried when then told me I had to remove the mirena coil. Cancer, surgery, chemo etc etc, yep I could deal with that, but the thought of returning to painful periods, nah. But my cancer was hormone fed so it had to go. On the bright side tamoxifen does repress periods in most women. I've had one period in the 2yrs since finishing treatment, it was ridiculously heavy, but not at all painful. :)
