Bone aches and anastrazole

started anastrazol in November, suffering dreadfully now with bone aches, feel like an old woman, I'm 65 but was always active before my BC. Last week couldn't go to the gym I ached so much. It's a ladies only gym with very good and caring staff who have supported me throughout, we work on air pressure resistance as well as small weights and I'm back to basic start levels so not overdoing things.

I also take statins, atorvastatin, which can also cause muscle aches. Do I need both? Is it the combination that is causing me problems?

any suggestions?

  • Hi Snowdrops,

Thanks for posting on the forum. The moderators have asked us to post a reply.

One of the side effects of anastrozole is muscle weakness and bone aches/pains. You can read more about the side effects here. Many people find that taking painkillers manages the aching well but for others the pain is more difficult to cope with. It is a good idea to speak to your doctor about the side effects you are experiencing. If you have the contact details for a breast care nurse it would be a good idea to talk to them about how you are feeling.

Many people who take statins find that they have problems with muscle aches or weakness. It is possible that taking both drugs is making the situation worse. As a nurse I cannot say whether you should continue taking both drugs. This is something only your doctors can advise you about.

    Kind regards,

    Deborah

  • Thank you, saw my GP this morning and am stopping the statins for a short while. He is also contacting my oncologist to see if has a "second choice" drug and we will wait to hear what he says, and if stopping the statins helps at all.

it helps to know that these things are not abnormal ,glad you are here to talk to.
