Radiotherapy treatment for neck cancer

a couple of things that I have experienced from my treatment,  I finished my radiotherapy treatment 2.5 weeks ago  I am suffering extreme anxiety especially with regard to the thickened saliva at the back of my throat I have also now got mouth thrush which again is painful. I am due to finish my morphine 10mg twice a day tonight.  These are my questions   Has anybody else had anxiety with regard to the thickened saliva if so how did you manage it and how long did it take to go?  I am due to stop my morphine tablets I have been on them for 2 weeks did anyone get withdrawal from stopping  their tablets

I am having counselling and have been told I have PTS anyone else been told similar diagnosis

  • Hi Jackie

Well you have earned a badge for getting through the treatment, it takes some comittment. As you are 2 weeks out the other end things will improve for you each day. Including starting to get your taste back about 6 weeks. Sore mouth and throat will gradually subside, if you have any of the two part mouthwash left over keep using it. Keep your teeth brushed regularly with a soft toothbrush. The thick saliva does hang on though but it does improve a bit. Try drinking soda water or weak black tea to break it up. I still get it 18 months after radotherapy finished. But there are ways to deal with it. The anxiety thing is common to most of us who have cancer, however you mention you are taking morphine, this powerful painkiller can give you anxiety, and you may be focussing on that one issue, namely the thick saliva. The withdrawal symptoms can include intensely itchy skin, restless limbs, and feeling like you are coming down with flu, aches pains snuffy nose etc. you might feel a bit sick too but it lasts only a few days. Hoping you make a good recovery there are great days ahead for you. Kim

although it does not feel like it you are on an upward slope. The trouble is it takes a lot longer to recover than it did to get to this stage.

the two weeks post treat are the worst

i had mouth ulcers and had a further tongue biopsy 3 weeks post treatment.

its the worst constant pain I have ever had and it's a 24 hour thing. But it gets better

my advice to you is to keep up your oral cleaning routines .... I used cohapsol on prescription from doctor......
