Long term effects of treatment

I'm 14 weeks post treatment for throat cancer, it would appear from my latest scans that all went well and the tumours have reduced considerably however, after 14 weeks I am still unable to eat solid food and feel exhausted and emotional all the time

i have very little saliva ( which I'm told won't improve) and my mouth is sore due to being dry all the time,

the mouth sprays and gells do little as they only last a few minutes

My tongue is too weak to swallow much and I'm really struggling to swallow even the mushiest  food

My question is, has anyone else had the same problems ?

If so, how did you cope and how long until you were able to eat

  • Welcome to the forum Gary.

I'm so pleased to hear that the treatment went well and your tumours have reduced. Recovery can be tough and can take a while so it's understandable you might feel all the over place physically and emotionally.

I'm sure other members who have been in the same position will be along soon to share their advice and experiences with you but in the meantime I thought this article might help. I'm not sure which type of throat cancer you have but if you have oesophageal cancer it gives advice and tips for eating.

You can also give our nurses a call next week. If you're based in the UK you can call them for free on 0808 800 4040. They are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi Gary

It will get better and you will eat proper food again and your mouth and throat will not be sore, you will also regain most of your taste.

You should have been given exercises to do to strengthen your tongue and throat and neck muscles. It is really important that you do these regularly and for the rest of your life. If you dont the muscles involved can lose their elasticity and you could lose the ability to swallow altogether. Buy a sports type steel or aluminium water bottle and take it with you everywhere taking regular sips to moisten your mouth tongue and lips. Aloe vera type drinks that can be got in Health food shops help in soothing the throat, they worked well for me anyway. The dry mouth is permanent but the consistency of the saliva will become more normal with time. Take good care of your teeth, buy a soft toothbrush and use the prescription Duraphat toothpaste 3 times a day. If you have any of the two part mouthwash left over, that you used during radiotherapy use it up until the mouth sores have gone. The tiredness and feeling weird does continue but you will start to get some good days followed by a bad day. Everyone is different but at 6 months some normality started to return. Wishing you well during your recovery. Kim
