How do I come to terms with this?

I know this may sound silly, and that I shouldn't listen, but my sister and mum went to see a psychic last night who seemed to get so much right for them even naming names of people who had recently passed, and she told my sister that my cancer is going to come back in my other breast and that I ll need a mastectomy but I ll be ok, and that my daughter needs to be checked too!! I was just starting to move on from the daily worry but now I don't know what to think. I know I should ignore it but it's gonna make me more worried now.

  • Hi ,i can understand your concern, ask your sister and mother to go to the doctors or consultant and explain how they  believe they have been given a message for you and your daughter. And mabe you will get checked out. If you don.t deal with this you will become unwell with worry. Don.t feel silly. Take care.Sue xx

  • Hi Kimw

Let me put your mind at rest, these psychics are just con people, who take money ( or "donations"), by false pretences, from often vulnerable people and should be locked up in jail. No one in the world can supernaturally predict the future. They work in a very clever way using guesswork and feedback from their clients to make predictions that can have several meanings, the client making the prediction fit their circumstances.  It is very clever but very nasty of the "psychic" to make you worry about your daughter, knowing that some types of cancer can run in families.

If you are worried about this make a visit to your doctor to put your mind at rest. And tell your mum and sister to not be so gullible in future. Or at least get next Saturdays lotto numbers from the psychic. Happy days Kim

  • Hi

I agree with kimchosen, I think it is all guess work.  Please do not worry about this, and if you are too worried get checked out a the doctors.  It really upsets me to think they can say these things, which understandly worry people.  It is horrible!!  As Kimchosen says no one can predict the future!!

    Take care xxx

  • Thank you ladies and I know in my head you are right but she got so much right for them, I know a lot can be fed from the people there, I ve been to psychics myself, and never really got any "proof" or anything concrete, but lots of people have been to this lady and said how good she is. I just didn't think they were allowed to tell you negative things, and like you said kimchoson I thought it was awful to say about my daughter too cos my breast cancer wasn't a hereditary one. I did think that it was scare mongering cos I d already asked my consultant when I was diagnosed if she should be tested nd they said no x

  • Hi again  Kim

I'm so glad that your daughter hasn't got an increased chance of getting breast cancer.

Here is another bit of the "psychology" these charlatins use. And it is used by every con artist out there, whatever their scam. The people conned are too embarrassed or dumbstruck to admit they have been conned so tell others how wonderful the con person is. The short of it is your sister and mother were duped into visiting this so called psychic on recommendation from other duped folks. (Who themselves may have at an earlier meeting with the psychic inadvertantly divulged some info about your mother or sister)

Given enough information you can make educated guesses about the likely outcome of any event but let me just say once again "there is no one who can predict the future".

If you've ever seen Derren Brown the illusionist, he comes out with great predictions about people who he has never met. On one show he showed how it was done, it is very clever trickery. I imagine that psychics use very similar methods although I know that some are just self deluded souls, who can cause other people great distress by their thoughtless comments. Kim

  • Thank you kimchoson your words make a lot of sense xxx

  • Hi again Kim

Having cancer myself I know exactly what you mean by "the daily worry" and this episode has come at a crucial time for you when as you say you were just starting to move on from that worry. You have come through a lot so far and you deserve a break to start living a normal relaxed life again. I'm sure you will overcome this latest hurdle too and get back on track to enjoying your life. Best of wishes Kim

  • Like u said its another hurdle I ll make sure I jump lol x I hope you re doing ok too x we re all in this club we never wanted to be in but we re all fighters too x no matter how much time I ve got left on earth I m gonna make each day a positive one xxx I ve also got a mammogram In about 8 weeks so I ll find out the truth from a doctor!!!

Best wishes to you too you ve made me see sense haha

  • Hi Kimw,

These psychics are nothing but con merchants who prey on the worried and vulnerable and who should be locked up. They use a trick called Cold Reading which can look quite convincing - especially if an individual is open to suggestion and wants to believe."Cold readings commonly employ high-probability guesses, quickly picking up on signals as to whether their guesses are in the right direction or not, then emphasizing and reinforcing chance connections and quickly moving on from missed guesses."

There's a pretty good description of how this con work on Wikipedia - see en.wikipedia.org/.../Cold_reading

That said, I'm sure your oncologist and GP have said to go back if you have any concerns and I'm pretty sure that you were already planning to keep an eye on your daughter in case there was a heriditary element.

The thing that angers me most about these charlatans is that they cause unnecessary fear and anxiety.

    Cheers
    Dave

  • Thanks dave, my first thought was my daughter as you said, that's why I asked if she needed testing. I m due for a mammogram in may so I ll ask again and see what that say x its lovely that people on here understand.
