Hello everyone.just like to introduce myself,my name is Colin,I'm 48 and have just been through surgery for tongue cancer.i got diagnosed late June and had surgery consisting of tumour in my tongue being removed and a neck dissection on my left side.every thing went really well and I'm going back to work soon.hoping to here about anyone else who has gone through this and the best way forward from here.

  • Hi Colin,

Its a really rubbish thing to happen, but at the end of it all your find you do appricate things a lot more.

I had the same as you, at 23, same surgeries as well, apart from a few extras due to a complication.

Great to hear you are getting back to work, I found going back to "normal" life a bit difficult at first. I had a lot of worry about general stuff, and I had to adapt the way I speak, what words I use etc so people cound understand me, and its all going well. I don't tend to mention anything to people, unless they ask about the scar.

I had my ops last November/December, your neck does heal and return to look normal, but it feels a bit weird to touch, I am still getting some feeling back, I expect you are the same.

I hope your return goes well, and remember to enjoy life as much as possible, we all tend to streesed at work, but I find it much easier to leave it at work now. Take things slowly and be as calm as possible.

  • Hi colin, I was told I had left base tongue cancer in January, I had a biopsy and tonsils removed, had one round of cisplatin chemo and six weeks of radiotherapy which was tough. It's now October and apart from the monthly check ups I'm fine. Eating is still difficult at times as some taste buds still not working. The salivary glands at the back of my throat still causing a few problems, most mornings I'm sick. But that's a small price to pay now as pet scan results say No more cancer. Wishing you all the best. Janet
