Even though I have the all clear I just can't trust my body any more. Does anyone know how I can get over this?

I was diagnosed two years ago with bile duct cancer, and had surgery and chemotherapy as well as being on a clinical trial for immunotherapy. Since then all the scans have shown no evidence of disease. But I can't trust my body any more: it didn't tell me I was so close to dying (the cancer was found incidentally). I know how lucky I am to be here, but every little ache or pain, rash or bruise, fills me with fear and all the anxiety and terror I felt initially just rushes back. I know that this is irrational but I don't seem able to help it. Does anyone have any ideas that might help me get things in perspective?

  • Hi Dianthus and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm so pleased your scans have continued to bring good news, although I'm sorry about the impact this journey has had on your relationship with your body.

I hope it helps to know that this is actually quite a common reaction after getting the all clear from cancer and completely understandable too, especially as your cancer was found by chance, so try not too be too hard on yourself. I'm sure some of our members will share their experiences and advice with you soon but in the meantime I hope these articles I've found about your emotions after treatment and the fear of cancer recurrence will reassure you that you are not alone and will help calm your mind when those thoughts start to appear.

The NHS have some really good tips on managing anxiety as well but if you haven't done so already, then something else you may want to look in to is counselling. Quite a lot of our members have benefitted from this at various stages of their cancer journeys and were really grateful for having the chance of working through their thoughts and feelings with a third person who had no attachment to their situation so if you'd like to find out more, do have a look at the cancer and counselling section of our website.

I hope this helps Dianthus, and that you're able to get the support you're seeking at this time.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
